I'll play Siskel to Jeremiah's Ebert. And, disclaimer, we don't actually have tv channels, cable or otherwise, and are always WAY behind on tv shows.

Justine, I'm with you on Amanda Tapping. Love her. :) Jeremiah and I disagree about her all the time. And I hope you comment again, nice to have someone on my side of things. :D

That said, I am looking forward to seeing the rest of the series for the character development and Tapping's easing into her character more. I can't make a decision based on three episodes. ;)

Hi Justine,
Thanks for the comments. :D I can see from your site that you are a big Amanda Tapping fan. I didn't mean to offend with my blog post, just post my initial observations and opinions on the show. Like I said in the first sentence of the post, I am only a few episodes into the series, and am willing to give it more time to develop.

In response to your comments:
1. I'll get back to you after I finish the first season...

2. If you've read any other parts of my blog you will know I have a love/hate relationship with Stargate in particular with the writing of the show. IMHO Stargate was VERY hit or miss with some awesome and some terrible shows.

Veteran writer or not, the first three episodes of Sanctuary were very predictable and accomplished little more than to introduce the characters and a couple villains and establish a premise. The third episode in particular typified what I hate about modern TV in that you supposedly have these medieval women who came from the past, yet emerge from vats purportedly filled with a green goo, with meticulously plucked eyebrows, vibrant lip-gloss and perfectly coiffed hair and through a Star-Trek-worthy miraculous psychic power can speak modern English. On top of that they were just used as a plot device to introduce what I assume to be one of the primary villains in the order of Cabal and to top it all off they were representations of one of the most overdone British legends in literature and Hollywood.

3. A villain is hardly what I mean by flawed characters. I'm talking about the main characters. I mean a character who makes mistakes, gets upset, gets irrational, hurts other people and does all those things that people in real life do. If you want to use Stargate as an example, just look at some of the cast of Atlantis (aside perhaps from Weir). Characters that are not always smiling, that can be jerks sometimes and don't have a happy-go-lucky outlook, make for much more interesting stories.

I have to disagree on a few points.

1. You find a 157-year-old scientist with all that living history, angst, heartbreak, and wisdom under her belt shallow? I'm interested to hear what kind of characters you find layered and interesting, then. Wow.

2. Damian Kindler is a seasoned, talented screen wright from both Stargate and now Sanctuary. Episodes like The Five and Revelations just stand to prove that.

3. These aren't flawed characters? Helen Magnus's ex-fiancee was Jack the Ripper and killed dozens of women, their daughter is the offspring of two very powerful Abnormals, the comedic relief of the show is some sort of werewolf and struggles, at an alarmingly evolving rate, with his oncoming transformation. What the hell is a flawed character, then?

I mostly agree, except for the "could use more j-horror" thing. I think the dolls were pretty sufficient there, being voiced by children in that weird, easy rhythm thing.

I liked it, but am interested in watching this one with the dubbing.

You forgot Gimli, or Efreet, or Frewfray or whatever his name was. He was the only truly realistic person in the whole flippin' movie. I'd totally buy his animator dinner. With wine.

Hey, wow, my first negative comment that wasn't just spam. Rock on!

Anyway, Patti, if you do end up coming back here, which I doubt, you might look around some more. I am actually quite open minded about many things (except maybe not movies). In particular, I am a firm believer in the spirit world and ghosts. It's actually because I am a believer that I am such a skeptic when it comes to photos (and also because Im a professional photographer). The problem is that so many people have cried ghost that the common person discredits every single photo out there as a phony. As such, when people take ordinary pictures and flaws in the photographic process and say it's a ghost, it really irks me.

Anyway, Ill make you a deal. you show me these "amazing' pictures and if I can be convinced that they are apparitions, then I will modify this blog post to reflect it as such.

You obviously have not experimented much or taken many so-called "orb" pictures. I personally have and know others, engineer major skeptic types who have and come to an entirely different conclusion, and we have amazing photos to debunk your dust theory. Do you think there is dust in the air during a major downpour, with unbelieveable pictures? Too bad people aren't more open-minded instead of such know-it-all's!
